The near-interface region of an epitaxial Ba 0.3 Sr 0.7 TiO 3 thin film grown on LaAlO 3 was found to consist of a high density of stacking faults bounded by partial dislocations. The stacking faults can extend over large distances . Various possible atomic configurations of the faults were considered. The atomic structures of the faults were identified using high-resolution electron microscopy and simulation as well as energy-filtered imaging. The and faults were found to lie predominately on the {100} (...) and {110} planes. The faults on , or have never been observed before in perovskites. The stacking faults on {100} have a structure consisting of a double layer of edge-sharing TiO 6 octahedra. The excess of Ti was detected by energy-filtered imaging. The formation of the extended stacking faults is probably related to a small amount of excess Ti during the film deposition, which may originate from the non-stoichiometry of the ceramic targets BaTiO 3 and SrTiO 3 . It is also enhanced by the misfit-induced compressive strain in the early stages of the film growth. (shrink)

The DNA in a eukaryotic nucleus is packaged into a nucleosome array, punctuated by variations in the regular pattern. The local chromatin structure of inducible genes appears to fall into two categories: preset and remodeling. Preset genes are those in which the binding sites for trans‐acting factors are accessible (;i.e. in a non‐nucleosomal, DNase I hypersensitive configuration) prior to activation. In response to the activation signal, positive factors bind to cis‐acting regulatory elements and trigger transcription with no major alterations in (...) the chromatin structure of the promoter region. In contrast, remodeling genes are those in which some of the required cis‐acting regulatory elements are packaged into nucleosomes. The nucleosomes must be perturbed in response to an activation signal in order for the trans‐acting factors to gain access to cis‐acting elements; a chromatin remodeling process which forms DNase I hypersensitive sites must occur. In both cases, precise positioning of nucleosomes along the promoter region of a gene appears to be critical for appropriate regulation of expression. (shrink)

_Mingli tan_ and _Qiongli xue_ are textbooks written during the late Ming and early Qing periods, and are the earliest examples of a systematic introduction to western logic The former describes logical reasoning and the basic structure of syllogism．In Verbiest' s _Qiongli Xue_(_Study of Fathoming Principles_) in its surviving form there is a section titled “General introduction to logical reasoning”．In _Qiongli xue_, the expression “litui”(reasoning) is used as the translation for the Latin word “syllogismus”, while in modern Chinese the word (...) “syllogism” is often translated as “sanduanlun” (argument with three parts)．Looking at the Greek epistemology of this word, “litui” is a more accurate translation than “sanduanlun．” This article considers the sections in _Mingli tan_ and _Qiongli xue_ on logical reasoning and discusses the problem with translation of “syllogismus” in different contexts．It is pointed out with the help of concrete examples from _Qiongli xue_ that “syllogismus” means “reasoning” in a wider sense, while in the context of valid forms of reasoning, it means the particular structure of Aristotelian logical reasoning in three parts．. Bu çalışmanın amacı, tasavvuf düşüncesinin önemli yorumcularından biri olan Molla Câmî’nin a‘yân-ı sâbite anlayışını ortaya koymak ve bu kavramın kazâ-kader, insan fiilleri ve yaratma teorisiyle olan ontolojik ilişkisini incelemektir. Vahdet-i vücûd düşüncesinin en temel kavramlarından olan a‘yân-ı sâbite, Câmî’ye göre ilahî ilimde bulunan sâbit hakikatler; haricî ve somut bir varlığa sahip olmayan, ezelî ve ebedî olarak değişmeyen maʻkûl suretlerdir. Bu sâbit hakikatler hüküm, eser ve nitelikleri vasıtasıyla dış dünyada zuhur etmektedirler. Câmî’ye göre kazâ varlıkların aynlarına dair ilahî hükmü; kader ise (...) bu hükmün tafsili, yani varlıkların istidat ve kabiliyetlerine göre belirli zaman ve sebeplere bağlı olarak tahakkuk etmesidir. Bu tarif, Eşʻarîlerin kazâ-kader tanımıyla uyuşmaktadır. Ancak Câmî, “kaderin sırrı” ve “kaderin sırrının sırrı” formülasyonlarıyla kader meselesini vahdet-i vücûd ontolojisi üzerinden yorumlamaktadır. Buna göre kaderin sırrı, her bir aynın a‘yân-ı sâbitede belirlenmiş kabiliyetine göre varlıkta zuhûr etmesi; kaderin sırrının sırrı ise ilahî zâtta bulunan değişmeyen nisbet ve şe’nlerdir. Let K denote prefix-free Kolmogorov complexity, and let $K^A$ denote it relative to an oracle A. We show that for any n, $K^{\emptyset ^{(n)}}$ is definable purely in terms of the unrelativized notion K. It was already known that 2-randomness is definable in terms of K (and plain complexity C) as those reals which infinitely often have maximal complexity. We can use our characterization to show that n-randomness is definable purely in terms of K. To do this we extend a (...) certain “limsup” formula from the literature, and apply Symmetry of Information. This extension entails a novel use of semilow sets, and a more precise analysis of the complexity of $\Delta _2^0$ sets of minimal descriptions. (shrink)

This chapter discusses the reception of The Classic of Filial Piety (Xiaojing孝經) from medieval to late imperial China. Based on the records found in Scripta Sinica database, we see the way in which female biographies indicate the increasing importance of The Classic of Filial Piety in female education during late imperial China. Male biographies, however, demonstrate the opposite trend. I suggest this phenomenon does not reflect the decline in its male readership, but rather a change in the status of the (...) book. I then discuss how the text played a significant role in political culture before medieval period and became mainly a primer after Southern Song. The marginalization of the text in political and elite circles caused it to figure less prominently in male biographies. In addition, this chapter also discusses certain aspects related to The Classic of Filial Piety and female education, as well as the revival of the study of the Canon during the late Ming and how the book regained its political importance by the support of the Qing state. In this paper, I focus on analyzing the manifestation and significance of respect. I first illustrate the two meanings of jing 敬 and their connection in Confucian classical texts, which is helpful to understand the Confucian phenomenology of respect. The two meanings are seriousness as a mind-state and respect as an intentional feeling. After clarifying this point, I undertake a phenomenological analysis of respect, in order to show that respect helps one to achieve moral pursuit. This analysis takes the Kantian (...) notion of respect as a starting point but further is accomplished by the phenomenology of value and feeling. The respect for duties and affairs, the respect for personhood and dignity, and the respect for the worthy with merit motivate one to take moral actions. For example, respect contributes in taking one’s duties seriously, appreciating human beings’ spiritual values and good tendencies even when they have not been actualized, supporting the worthy to play a role, and emulating the worthy to make a contribution and serve others. In Subsequently, I clarify how respect helps one to achieve religious pursuit in one form of Christianity, in light of Max Scheler’s discussion on humility and reverence. Through revering God one respects others; through serving God and participating in God’s humble spirit one serves others. I elucidate the Confucian classics’ discussions on religious experience, in order to show how respect helps one to achieve religious pursuit in one form of Confucianism, and how it is similar and different from Max Scheler’s clarification. The concrete relation between respect and li 禮 in the Confucian tradition will be treated in another work. (shrink)

This paper rigorously examines the primitive foundations of economic reasoning through an original framework based on symbolic logic. Extending previous work, it formalizes economic conceptions (\(\mathbb{C}\)), symbols (\(s_i\)), and introduces a structured language (\(\mathcal{L_{\mathbb{C}}}\)) to define their formation and interpretation. Organized as a continuous chain of declarations and illustrations, the paper offers a concise, systematic approach to understanding the philosophy of economic reasoning through formal representations.

A fair amount of recent Xunzi scholarship has focused on the problem of moral transformation. The problem being addressed supposedly arises this way. According to Xunzi, human nature is innately or inherently evil; individuals, nevertheless, can become moral agents capable to embracing and loving moral principles. Unfortunately, Xunzi does not provide any account of how individuals whose characters are inherently evil can transformed into full moral agents. Several scholars have proposed various ways in which Xunzi could address the problems, but (...) all are unsatisfactory for various reasons. In this paper, I will develop my own reading of Xunzi’s moral philosophy. My approach is to put Xunzi in the context of classical Confucianism, a tradition that shaped Xunzi’s thinking on his metaphysical assumption about the world, his reverence for the wisdom of sage kings, and his emphasis on education as the necessary condition for virtue development. This essay compares Greek and Chinese conceptions of the origin of the world based on the concept of cosmo-metaphysics, by which I mean a philosophical scheme that addresses at once the law of the universe and the primary cause of substance or being. In regarding God or the first mover as both the cosmic and substantial principle of unity, Aristotle spells out a cosmo-metaphysics in his On the Universe and the Metaphysics. Aristotle’s cosmo-metaphysics, I propose, finds a close parallel in (...) the metaphysical system represented in the Laozi 老子, the Daoist classic, and “The Great Commentary” on the Yijing 易經. Both texts articulate a cosmo-metaphysics that integrates the cosmic and substantial principles of unity through the two concepts of the Dao 道 and being versus nonbeing, the Chinese counterparts of Aristotle’s prime mover and being qua being. Chinese and Western metaphysics share not only a fundamental assumption about the origin of the world but also the hypothesis of an ineffable and inactive first mover. Where Aristotle resorts to analogy and metaphor to name and characterize this elusive and passive mover, Chinese philosophers prefer to leave it unnamed and use natural images to illustrate its nature. Despite the different approaches, however, the fundamental assumption about the prime mover as both a substantial and cosmic principle lies at the root of both Chinese and Western metaphysics. The comparative lens centered on the concept of cosmo-metaphysics thus uncovers a distinctive Chinese metaphysics that corresponds closely to that in the West, a correspondence that calls into question some prevailing presumptions about Chinese philosophy. Along with Sahîh-i Bukhari, many commentaries and memoirs have been made on Sahîh-i Muslim, which is accepted as the most reliable source of hadith and consists of sound narrations. Among the commentaries written today, the comprehensive commentary, which is a product of labor that cannot be ignored and stands out whit some features, is Ethiopian scholar Mohammed b. The commentary of Ali al-İtyubî’s Sahîh-i Muslim commentary on al-Bahru’l-muhît and his holy book is Kurratü ayni’l-muhtâc. This article aims to briefly introduce (...) İtyûbî with his educational life and Works, the method he followed in his annotations, the sources he used, his reports that do not require many works, his criticisms and evaluations, his perspective, his world of thought, and to reveal and evaluate his different approaches and ideas on certain subjects. Reaching 47 volumes together with the Commentary on the Muqaddima, the work has the feature of being the widest commentary of Sahîh-I Muslim. By transmitting the information in the previous works in a compact and collective manner, he did not leave the need to apply to them, and he made the hadiths easier to understand whit the memzuc method that explains word by word. The extensive interpretation of hadiths, the mention of different narrations, and the fact that the judgments derived from hadiths are regarded as material are some of the issues that make commentary important. This article aims to briefly introduce İtyûbî with his educational life and works, the method he followed in his commentaries, the resources he used, his transmissions that do not reguire many works, his criticisms and evalua-tions, his perspective, his world of thought, and to reveal and evaluate his different approaches and ideas on certain subjects. This paper, taking ideas from history of philosophy, reflects on Wang, Yang-Ming’s criticisms of Chu, Xi. The reflection indicates that these critical ideas are all derived directly from Wang’s interpretation of Dah Xue (The Great Learning). Taking the perspective that nearly all Wang’s works are based on criticizing Chu’s theory, we can say however that Wang is deeply influenced by Chu. Actually, their difference is not that explicit as seen from the generally held distinction in history of philosophy between Cheng (...) and Chu about Li (principle) school on the one hand and Lu and Wang about Xing (principle) school on the other. In fact, according to Wang’s criticisms which concentrated the limits of Chu’s theory of Kung Fu, we see clearly that the problem originated from Wang’s confusion of Chu’s theory of Kung Fu with Chu’s personal ability of Kung Fu. Moreover, on the Kung Fu theoretical level, Wang’s criticisms confused Chu’s theory of Kung Fu procedure and ontology with pure Kung Fu theory. Consequently this confusion caused the lost of accuracy. Besides, there were other problems relating to criticism based on different interpretations of Pre-Qing Dynasty texts and various views on deviating editions of Dah Xue. This paper however holds the view that these differences caused by referring to ancient texts can be attributed to their differences concerning their attitudes towards the fundamental philosophical problems. It is on thisview that this paper argues that the difference between Wang and Chu can be resolved by elaborating their differing problematics.本文針對哲學史上王陽明對朱熹批評的意見做反思，指出這些批評意 見，從直接的材料上講，主要都是依據《大學》文本詮釋而來的，從陽明的 哲學創作來講，又多是針對朱熹理論做反對而來，就此而言，王陽明實在是 受到朱熹影響很深，兩人真正的差距，不像是哲學史上將程朱、陸王分為理 學、心學兩派之差異那麼樣的極端。又從實際上王陽明所爭辯的問題來看，則多為朱熹工夫不得力的批評，這就又有屬於朱熹談工夫理論還是朱熹自己 的工夫修養程度兩種問題，陽明亦是混淆此兩者。又從工夫理論的批評來 講，陽明又有哲學基本問題的錯置，將朱熹談於工夫次第及形上學存有論問 題的發言都從本體工夫的形式去批評，以致失去其批評的準確度。此外，還有從不同的先秦典籍之義理依據而做的文本詮釋之批評，以及對《大學》版 本本身的意見不同之批評，但上述批評，還是可以化約到哲學基本問題的不 同所致之批評。本文即以此為進路，說明陽明批評朱熹的意見是有可以被解 消之處，關鍵即在問題意識不同。. 이 논문은 육구연의 이단론(異端論)에 대한 조명을 목적으로 한다. 육구연은 불교⋅도교를 이단으로 비판하기는 하지만, 그가 주로 비판하는 이단은 유학 내부의 이단이다. 유학 내부의 이단은 노자(老子)의 영향으로 예(禮)와 인간 외면에 대해 강조한다. 육구연은 초기 유학을 크게 세 가지로 구분한다. 첫째, 안자⋅증자⋅맹자의 정통 계열이다. 둘째, 자하⋅자장⋅고자의 외(外)를 중시하는 도덕 이론을 가진 유학자들이 있다. 셋째, 순자 계열로 제도를 통한 사회적 효과를 중시한다. 그리고 그는 이 세 가지 초기 유학의 유형이 송대(宋代) 신유학 운동에서도 그대로 나타난다고 본다. 셋째 계열은 왕안석이고, 둘째 계열은 정주학이다. 첫째 계열은 바로 (...) 육구연 자신이다. 정통 이외의 나머지 두 계열은 인간의 자발성이 아니라, 외적 장치를 도덕의 근거이자 실천의 핵심적인 요소라고 간주한다. 『呂氏春秋』는 先秦 諸家의 사상을 집대성하고 古來의 陰陽과 五行의 範疇를 활용하여 天地人 三位一體의 도식을 수립하였다. 이것은 인간을 중심으로 시간과 공간, 하늘과 땅의 사물을 유기적으로 연계시킨 것으로 통일제국을 위한 설계도라고 평가할 수 있다. 구체적으로는 음양과 오행을 결합시켜 우주 만물을 분류하고 도식화하면서 동시에 人事와 연계시켰다. 내용상으로는 정치, 경제, 사회, 군사, 천문, 지리, 의학, 교육, 역사 등 거의 모든 학문 분야를 포괄하고 있다. 특히 전국기에 유행하였던 『逸周書』, 「夏小正」, 『黃帝四經』 등의 문헌과 鄒衍을 비롯한 직하학자들의 사상이 반영된 『管子』에 보이는 月令사상을 종합하였다. 나아가 그것을 구체화 시킨 陰陽 (...) 刑德사상, 현실 政治의 得失과 연계된 災異說을 구체화하고 체계화하였다. 그러나 내용과 형식면에서 고래의 사상과 문헌을 단순히 집록한 것이 아니라 1년 12개월의 방식을 채택하고 정치 사회의 제반 분야로 정령을 확대하였다. 十二紀에서는 陰陽과 五行, 天干과 地支를 결합시키고, 그 과정에서 야기되는 모순을 해고자 季夏에 中央 土를 배당하고 다른 시절과 마찬가지로 그에 해당하는 정령을 배당함으로써 월령 사상을 완성시켰다. 따라서 『여씨춘추』의 음양 오행론 가운데 일부는 비록 선진 제자서에 산견되는 것이지만 전체를 통일적으로 체계화한 것은 사상사적으로 중대한 의미를 지닌다. 무엇보다도 음양과 오행의 결합에 근거한 월령사상은 양자의 물리적 결합에 머물지 않고, 구체적으로 백성의 측면에서의 農業 부문과 지도자의 측면에서의 政治라는 두 측면에서 질적으로 정밀화되었음을 확인할 수 있다. 예컨대 재이설의 근원은 춘추시대에까지 거슬러 올라갈 수 있지만, 정치와 직접적으로 연계된 것은 월령사상과 궤도를 함께한다. 이 글은 육구연이 강학활동에 대해 살펴보려는데 그 목적이 있다. 남송시기의 학자들은 '精舍'나 '書院' 중심으로 성인의 道를 전하고 자신의 학문적 관점을 견고하게 다지며 문호를 형성해 나갔는데, 呂祖謙이 강학을 펼쳤던 麗澤書院과 張의 岳麓書院, 주희의 白鹿洞書院, 육구연의 象山精舍 등이 그 사례다. 상산정사는 육구연이 年에 朝廷에서의 관직생활을 접고 貴溪에 자리하고 있는 應天山에 올라 精舍를 짓고 자신의 철학을 후학들에게 전한 장소로, 그는 이곳에서 心學의 틀을 보다 확고하게 자리매김하고 후학양성에 힘썼다. 사실 육구연이 강학활동을 펼친 시기는 이밖에 두 번이 더 있다. 34세에 省試에 급제한 후 臨安에서 강학활동을 (...) 하기 시작한 것이 첫 번째고, 그 후 金溪로 돌아와 44세에 관직생활을 시작하기 전까지 집안의 동편에 있던 槐堂에서 10여 년간 강학활동을 한 것이 그 두 번째다. 특히 槐堂강학시기에는 중국철학사에서 빼놓을 수 없는 중대한 학술모임인 아호모임과 백록동강의가 있었던 시기이며, 楊簡과 哀燮舒璘傅子雲 등과 같은 걸출한 제자를 배출한 시기이기도 하다. 그런데 지금까지 몇몇 학자들은 육구연이 淳熙 元年(1174) 臨安에 가서 靖安縣 主簿를 제수 받았고, 또 순희 6년(1179) 崇安縣 主簿로 조정되었다는 연보의 기록에 의거해, 이 시기에 관직생활을 하였다고 보고 있다. 하지만 行狀이나 어류, 주희의 편지글 등의 관련 자료들을 분석해보면, 이 시기에 육구연은 관직생활에 나아간 것이 아니라 그저 관직의 명을 받고 대기하고 있었을 뿐이었고, 거의 槐堂에서 강학활동에 힘을 기울였음을 확인할 수 있다. 즉, 그는 순희 9년(1183)부터 시작한 朝廷에서의 관직생활 4년과 荊門에서 1년 반을 제외한 대부분의 시간을 이렇게 강학활동에 전념한 것이다.그의 강학활동은 대략 다음과 같은 특징이 있다. 첫째, 육구연은 강제성을 지닌 學規나 외재하는 법도에 의존하지 않고, 학생 스스로의 자율성을 중시하였다. 누구나 지니고 있는 '본심'은 무엇이 옳고 그름을 판단할 수 있고, 늘 때에 맞게 행할 수 있는 기준을 제시하는 것이기에 그것에 따라 행한다면 굳이 규율과 같은 강제적 방식이 필요 없다고 보았다. 그래서 그는 글쓰기와 같은 마음 밖의 공부에 너무 힘쓰지 말 것을 당부하였고, 핵심처에서 학생들을 이끌고 변화시켰다. 둘째, 독서를 중시하지 않았다. 상산정사에서 강학할 때 책이 그리 많지 않았다는 것이나, 槐堂에서 禮記의 글자해석 보다는 九容에 힘써야 함을 말한 것, 臨安에서 본심의 발현을 강조한 것 등은 모두 경전의 해석보다 우선적으로 힘써야 할 곳이 있음을 말한 것이다. 그렇다고 육구연이 독서를 부정한 것은 아니었다. 상산정사에서 맹자의 고자편을 읽으라고 한 것 등은, 책이 모두 내 마음을 주석한 것이므로 본심을 세우고 확충하는 방편으로 읽어도 됨을 인정한 것이다. 셋째, 강학의 목표는 누구나 성인됨에 있었다. 사람은 태어나면서부터 선험적으로 무엇이 옳고 그른지 판단할 수 있는 良知와 바름을 행할 수 있는 良能을 지니고 있기 때문에, 그저 이 마음을 바로 세우고 부단히 행하는 자는 누구나 성인의 경지를 맛볼 수 있다고 말하였다.宋元學案에서 象山學案과 더불어 槐堂諸儒學案을 별도로 언급하고 있는 것도, 모두 그가 一身의 安逸만을 위한 삶이 아닌 聖學에 뜻을 두고 이를 실현하기 위해 힘썼던 강학활동의 결과물이라 할 수 있다. 이 글은 心卽理를 근본이념으로 하는 心學은 조선에 전래된 이후 심학 본래의 시대정신 그리고 공자ㆍ맹자철학과의 본질적 관련성 등을 크게 조명받지 못하였을 뿐만 아니라 이단으로 규정되어 도가와 불교보다도 심한 비평을 받았다. 필자는 이전에 심학에 대한 조선 성리학자의 오해 원인을 심학의 의리에 대한 무지에서 찾았다. 그러나 지금은 시각을 달리해서 이해한다. 필자는 도덕가치에 대한 의식구조의 차이에서 근본적인 원인을 찾는다. 퇴계 이후 심학을 비평하는 조선의 성리학자들은 주자의 심성론 구조에 따라서 心을 氣로 인식할 뿐 육왕의 입장에서 순수한 도덕의지, 즉 도덕규범에 대한 立法의 작용을 갖춘 선의지의 존재와 (...) 그 위상을 결코 긍정하지 않는다. 정확하게 말하면 이해를 하지 않는 것이 아니라 못하는 것이다. 이미 性卽理와 心是氣가 그들의 도덕의식구조에서 확고한 위상을 차지하고 있는데, 心卽理를 수용할 수 있겠는가? 그들의 시각으로는 심학은 禪學의 위장에 불과할 것이다. 주지하는바와 같이 간재는 조선 기호유학의 殿軍으로 평가받는 大儒이다. 따라서 위로는 우암과 율곡, 더 나아가 주자의 도덕사유 체계를 몸과 마음으로 수용한 정통 정주학자이다. 간재 역시 이전의 성리학자와 마찬가지로 상당한 분량을 할애하여 심학 의리의 부당성을 지적하고 비평하였다. 그러나 그 논조는 상산학에 대한 주자의 비평, 그리고 육왕학에 대한 명대 정주학자와 조선성리학자의 비평 규모를 벗어나지 않는다. 필자의 분석에 의하면, 육왕학에 대한 간재의 비평은 주로 심성론에 집중되어 있고, 그중에서도 심의 지위와 작용에 편중되어 있다. 비록 良知와 理氣論에 대해서도 언급함이 있지만, 심성론에 비하면 상대적으로 그 양이 매우 적다. 주희와 육구연 간의 논쟁은 송명이학의 전개 과정에 있어 가장 중요한 학술논쟁이자 주희의 학술 생애 중 가장 격렬했던 논쟁 가운데 하나였다. 양자 간의 사상적인 이견(異見)으로 인해 전개된 논쟁은 그들이 생존해 있을 때에는 다만 학문 방법론을 둘러싸고 벌어진 논쟁이었다고 한다면, 그들 사후 이로 말미암아 전개된 것은 양대 학술 유파 간의 분쟁이라 할 수 있다. 송⋅원⋅명대를 거쳐 학술계에서 지속적으로 진행되어 온 주륙이동논쟁은 주희 사상의 변화를 고증하는 문제에 있어 적절한 대응을 하지 못하였으니, 이로 말미암아 학자들은 육자의 사상을 제대로 알지 못하였을 뿐 아니라 주자의 사상 (...) 역시 제대로 파악할 수가 없었다. 그리하여 청대에 이르러 이 방면에 대한 연구가 더욱 심화되었고, 각각의 주장을 대표하는 인물들과 문장들이 무수히 쏟아져 나오게 되었다. 청대의 육왕학자인 이불은 『주자만년전론』을 통해 비교적 객관적인 입장에서 주자와 육구연의 사상을 비교 검토하고 있다. 『주자만년전론』이 비록 육왕학의 입장을 옹호하기 위해서 쓰여진 면이 없지 않지만, 주륙 사상에 대한 비교 작업이 객관적인 고증학적 작업을 통해서 수행되었다는 점이다. 이불의 주륙관은 육왕학을 기본 토대로 하여 주자학을 수용하고 있으며, 이를 통해 주륙 사상의 조화를 꾀하고자 하였다. 이러한 입장에서 이불은 육왕학에 대해서도 무비판적으로 수용하기보다는 육왕학에 대해 선별 취사하여 새로운 해석을 가하고 있다. It is a very stimulating work; indeed almost every sentence has spark and substance. Although it has been widely studied by East Asian scholars, so far in the West there has been only the translation into German by Father Olaf Graf, now virtually unobtainable. With his mastery of Chinese philosophical literature, his industriousness in research and his augmentation of the text by generous quotations from the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean commentaries, the translator has achieved extraordinary success in making the English version even more comprehensible than the original Chinese.--T. 본 논문에서는 「계사전」에서 왕충에 이르기까지, 길흉을 판단하는 방법이 새로운 지식과 함께 어떻게 변해왔는가라는 것을 검토하고 있다. 「계사전」에서는 시초(蓍草)의 신비성에 의거하여 길흉을 판단하고 있다. 그런데 秦漢代의 氣의 개념은 천지를 새로이 설명하면서, 천지의 변화인 계절을 통해서 인간의 길흉을 판단하게 했다. 『여씨춘추』와 『관자』·『회남자』를 통해서, 계절을 중심으로 인간의 길흉을 판단하는 방법이 당시에 굉장한 믿음을 얻고 있었음을 짐작할 수 있다. 이러한 사실은 「계사전」에서 언급하는 복서의 점(占)에 대한 의심, 복서의 점에 대한 믿음의 감소를 의미할 수도 있다고 생각한다. 『춘추번로』의 경우도 계절을 중심으로 하는 길흉판단의 입장에 서있기는 하지만, (...) 氣자체에 무게를 더 두고 있음을 볼 수 있다. 왕충의 경우는, 무위자연한 천과 氣를 주장하면서 인간의 길흉은 태어날 때부터 결정된다고 하여, 이전의 계절을 기준으로 길흉을 판단하던 관점도 완전히 벗어나고 있다. 이 왕충에 이르러서 시초의 신비성이 부정되고, 「계사전」에서 이야기하는 복서의 점은 그 근거를 잃게 되었다. 「계사전」에서 왕충까지의 길흉판단은 신비성에 의거한 방법에서 경험적인 방법으로의 전개를 보여주고 있다. The US Kidney Allocation System prioritizes giving high-longevity, high-quality kidneys to patients on the waiting list who have a high estimated posttransplant survival (EPTS) score. EPTS is calculated based on the patient's age, whether the patient has diabetes, whether the patient has a history of organ transplantation, and the number of years spent on dialysis. Our analyses show that Asian, Black or African American, and Hispanic or Latino patients were less likely to receive high-longevity kidneys compared with White patients, despite (...) having similar or better posttransplant survival outcomes. In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:Response to Leonard Tan and Mengchen Lu, “‘I Wish to Be Wordless’: Philosophizing Through the Chinese Guqin.”Chiao-Wei Liu“I wish to be wordless” connects Chinese philosophical thinking to music education at large. Through discussions of values associated with the Chinese instrument guqin, Leonard Tan and Mengchen Lu exemplified “how music serves as ‘Truth tool’ in the Chinese philosophical tradition.” Specifically, the authors explored four ideas: “Search for Truth” (求真), “Search (...) for Harmony” (求和), “Search for Ethical Awakening” (求覺), and “Search for Sagehood” (求聖). These ideas embody insights from three major Chinese philosophical traditions: Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism. Time prevents me from exploring the complex issues related to the interpretation and translation of classical Chinese texts, but I will attempt to focus on some of the authors’ arguments and how they relate to the practice of music learning and teaching in the classroom.1Quoting Confucius in their article title, Tan and Lu called attention to the suspicion of language found in the conversation between Confucius and his disciple. Extending the argument, the authors referred to Daoist philosophers and argued that although language can transmit wisdom, words remain limited in their ability to capture “the grand unity of the whole” and thus can “detract us [End Page 199] away from Truth.” Tan and Lu suggested that music, unlike language, serves as a truth “tool” and allows one to arrive at the Dao (Truth). Truth is conceived as a way of understanding the world, “a universal order, a new world perspective....” I agree with the authors about the limitations of language in capturing the complexity of human experiences, yet I am perplexed at how Truth is interpreted throughout the article.For example, in their discussion of “Search for Truth,” Tan and Lu related the art of playing the guqin to the Buddhist notion of mingxin jianxing (明心見性), clearing the heart-mind, seeing the inner-self, and locating Truth within the guqin player. Truth here is framed as good moral qualities residing within one’s innermost self (xing 性). Based on Li Zhi’s argument, Tan and Lu stated that “since a guqin player is all about her heart-mind and one’s music is all about the musician, music is the heart-mind of the musician.” Assuming that the heart-mind of the guqin player and the music are one, Tan and Lu suggested that when music and the musician’s innermost self are in sync, the musician may be able to attain spiritual Enlightenment. The example of Chopin’s Nocturne Op. 9, no. 1 helps readers learn that Truth does not reside within the performer or the music, but is located in the space where the two are in sync: “An ‘authentic’ performance of Chopin is one that is not only ‘true’ to Chopin and the stylistic conventions of his times, but also ‘true’ to the performer’s innermost being.”While Tan and Lu’s argument places Truth in both music and the innermost self (xing) of the performers, herein lies an assumption that qualities aligned with the music are ethically good, whereas those that differ are not. The search for Truth is thus a task of refusing any potential influence by “unethical thoughts” in order to stay true to the music. Recognizing the existing norms guiding various music traditions, I wonder how ethical and unethical thoughts are understood in music classrooms. As a music teacher, if unethical thoughts are interpreted as materials and expressions that are different or irrelevant to the music work, how do music teachers make sense of students’ feelings—whether they are the longing for a sense of belonging in the school ensemble or the desire to excel in certain aspects of school life? Are these feelings or desires “unethical” because they are separate from the musical work? If all acts dedicated to the faithful representation of the music work are considered ethical, how about the different needs of different students?Furthermore, in describing “Search for Ethical Awakening,” Tan and Lu stated that music written for the guqin is often associated with moral stories. We investigated the ethical behavior of Turkish university students to compare the difference in ethical behavior between business students and non-business students, examine the impact of key contingency variables on how they make decisions when confronted with an ethical dilemma, and investigate the process underlying the ethical behavior of Turkish students. Data were collected from business students at a major private university in Western Turkey. The results indicate that a Turkish student’s peers, marital status, and education level exert a significant (...) effect on their ethical behavior. Further, business students specifically differed from non-business students in their enhanced use of egoism when confronted with an ethical dilemma. Duygular; insanın epistemik, etik ve estetik yönleriyle doğrudan ilişkili varoluşsal özniteliklerdir. İnsan anlam-lı, değerli ve güzel bir hayat kurarken akılla birlikte duygulardan motivasyon almaktadır. Duygular, çok fonk-siyonlu yapısıyla insanın niyet, tutum, tavır ve eylemlerini belirleme, harekete geçirme, yönlendirme, etkile-me, dönüştürme, frenleme ve bazen de manipüle etme araçlarıdır. Bu nedenle ahlak başta olmak üzere insan eylemlerini problem edinen her araştırma, duyguları ele almak durumun¬dadır. Dolayısıyla ister pratik ister teorik alanda olsun pişmanlık, sadece insanın duygusal yanıyla değil, bilişsel yanıyla da ilgili bir duygudur. Pişmanlığın, geçmişte yaşanmış veya bugün etkisi devam eden bir olgu üzerinde kişinin hatasını fark etmesiyle oluşan bir üzüntü hali olması, onun bir değerlendirme duygusu oldu-ğunu gösterir. Duyguların harekete geçirici yönü pişmanlıkta geriye doğru işlevsiz olacağından, bu teşvik edici yön gelecekte pişmanlık yaratan durumun tekrarını önleme yönünde kendini göstermektedir. Böylece geç-mişte yaşanan üzücü bir durum, olumsuzdan olumluya, yıkıcıdan yapıcıya doğru ahlaki bir evrime zemin hazırlayacaktır. Bu makalede duygu etiğinin ilkeleri, kavramsal ve kuramsal çerçevesi göz önünde bulundurulmak suretiyle pişmanlık duygusunun mahiyeti, değeri ve fonksiyonelliği felsefî açıdan analiz edilip yorumlanacaktır. In Southern California, changes in precipitation and nitrogen deposition may influence the composition and functional potential of microbial communities and their resulting ability to degrade plant material. To test whether such environmental changes impact the distribution of functional groups involved in leaf litter degradation, we determined how the genomic diversity of microbial communities in a semi-arid grassland ecosystem changed under reduced (...) precipitation or increased N deposition. We monitored communities seasonally over a period of 2 years to place environmental change responses into the context of natural variation. Fungal and bacterial communities displayed strong seasonal patterns, Fungi being mostly detected during the dry season whereas Bacteria were common during wet periods. Most putative cellulose degraders were associated with 33 bacterial genera and predicted to constitute 18% of the microbial community. Precipitation reduction reduced bacterial abundance and cellulolytic potential whereas nitrogen addition did not affect the cellulolytic potential of the microbial community. Finally, we detected a strong correlation between the frequencies of genera of putative cellulose degraders and cellulase genes. Thus, microbial taxonomic composition was predictive of cellulolytic potential. This work provides a framework for how environmental changes affect microorganisms responsible for plant litter deconstruction. (shrink)

We tested the hypothesis that appropriate reference of cardiopulmonary exercise testing variables to lean body mass would eliminate differences in fitness between high-BMI and normal-BMI, otherwise-healthy children and adolescents typically seen when referencing body weight. We measured body composition with dual X-ray absorptiometry and CPET variables from cycle ergometry using both peak values and submaximal exercise slopes. In contrast to our hypothesis, (...) referencing to LBM tended to lessen, but did not eliminate, the differences in males and females;.WR/.HR differed between the two groups in females but not males. The mean percent predicted values for all CPET variables were below 100% in the high-BMI group. The pattern of CPET abnormalities suggested a pervasive impairment of O2 delivery in the high-BMI group. Tailoring lifestyle interventions to the specific fitness capabilities of each child may be one of the ways to stem what has been an intractable epidemic. (shrink)
